Embroidery stitches have multiple functions, some of which are defined in this project.

Edge stitches finish or embellish the hem, a tuck, or the perimeter of the fabric.

Join stitches connect the edges of two different fabrics to one another.

Surface stitches appear on the face or reverse of the fabric, or can encircle the remaining warp or weft after some elements (threads) of the base fabric have been removed.
