This is an edging stitch worked over a finished edge. The line of work is one stitch above the edge of the fabric. The vertical stitches are all the same size.

Working left to right, bring the needle out at A on the line of work indicated by the dotted line. Make a clockwise loop with the working thread. Pass the needle behind the fabric and out at B to the right of A on the line of work keeping the working thread under the needle. |
Again take the needle behind the edge of the fabric. Bring it out at C, which is one thread to the left of B on the line of work keeping the loop AB under the needle. |

Make a counterclockwise loop with the working thread. Take a stitch to the right, entering the fabric at D. Bring the needle out at E on the line of work keeping the working thread under the needle. |
Take a stitch FG, one thread to the left of DE, keeping the loop CD under the needle. Repeat Steps 1 to 4. |
