Come up at A. Holding the thread down with the left hand, insert the needle at B and come up at C next to A.

Insert the needle at D close to A. Taking a Straight stitch upward, come out at E close to B.

Slip the point of the needle downward under the horizontal bar between C and D (do not go into the fabric). Pull through. This is the first pair of parallel stitches.

Insert the needle at D, come out at F, then pass the working thread under the needle. Pull through. This is the first Chain stitch.

Insert the needle at F, come out parallel to F at G, then pass the working thread under the needle. Pull through. The second Chain stitch is complete.

Insert the needle at G, come out at H. Hold the working thread under the needle. Pull through.

Substitute H for C and repeat Steps 1 through 6.
