This stitch is worked toward you over a hemmed edge. Only horizontal stitches go through the fabric. When completed this stitch looks like a braid on the edge of the fold.

Bring the needle up at A on the left side of the hem. Bring the needle over the edge of the hem and insert it at B on the right side of the fold directly opposite A. Bring the needle up at C on the right side of the fold and slightly above AB. |
Insert the needle into the fabric at D directly below B. Bring the needle out at D1 directly opposite D. |

For the first loop, keep working the thread to the right and take the needle under AB from above. Keep the working thread under the point of the needle. |
Hold the working thread down and pass the needle under AB and under CD. Do not enter the fabric. |

Keep the working thread over the point of the needle. Insert the needle at E directly below D. Go through both layers of the hem to E1 directly opposite E. |
Hold the working thread down and bring the needle behind the left loop. Do not enter the fabric. |

Hold the working thread down and bring the needle behind the right loop. Go over the working thread. |
Insert the needle at F going though both layers of the hem. Come out at F1 directly opposite F. Continue the pattern following Steps 6 through 8. Keep the loops on the fold of the fabric. |
