According to Nordfors, p. 98, "The Maltese Cross in interlacing stitch differs from Maltese Cross Filling in that its base is made with one continuous thread rather than a series of vertical and horizontal interwoven threads. The interlacing is also worked in a continuous fashion rather than separately in each individual square."
