This sculpture, created in 1843 by Hiram Powers, became one of the most popular American works of art. Over one hundred thousand people paid to see it during its 1847-1848 tour around the United States. A few years later it was exhibited at the center of the first international trade fair, the Crystal Palace Exhibition, where this photo was taken by Ferrier and Owen. The statue created a sensation because of the scandalous subject - a woman on sale as a sexual object.
