Identity: Ethnicity
In multi-ethnic societies, sub-groups often retain their own costume traditions while living and working among others who favor Western attire or other ethnic dress styles. Ethnic or regional dress provides individual groups with a unique uniform. Whereas ethnic dress thrives in some areas, industrialization and population movement to cities have in many areas encouraged the adoption of Western lifestyles and clothing. In these areas traditional dress has been abandoned for daily use and is worn only at festivals or for special occasions.
